Honey, My Wife Burnt My Tax Return!

The best excuses we've heard for not filling in a tax return on time...and why they are not enough for the Taxman.

Honey, My Wife Burnt My Tax Return!

As far fetched as this sounds, this is something Tax Returns Direct is used to hearing on a regular basis, as people suddenly realise that the deadline for filling in their tax return is looming (31.01.12), and they wonder where the paperwork they need has gone.

Tax Returns Direct regularly gets calls from people who have lost their receipts, CIS payments, PAYE info (P45, P60 and P11D), benefits letters and other vital information they might need to fill in their return.

One of the most common reasons for this is the spouse burning or throwing out all the paperwork in a fit of anger. Gone are the days when one partner just chucked a pile of clothes out of the window, now we want to hit the other where it hurts – in the pocket. And a brush with the Taxman can be very painful.

Other reasons people get in a panic over doing their tax return:

  • keeping all their vital receipts in the glove box of the car or van, which is then stolen
  • A “ helpful” spouse, family friend or friend has offered to do their tax return and done more harm than good
  • The dog ate their receipts
  • They’ve been earning income on the side, haven’t declared it, and are nervous about coming clean

There are only a few very limited excuses that HMRC will accept for your tax return being late.  They have heard it all before and take a very hard line - at the end of the day it's your responsibility to prove in court that you had a good excuse for being late.

Lost documents and other excuses simply won’t be accepted and brushing it under the carpet can mean penalties and interest.

Remember the deadline for your return, no excuses, is January 31st 2012.
